Borehole pump prices, supplied and fitted
By BoreholePro. Updated 12 October 2026.
A submersible borehole pump costs R8,000 for a 30 m hole up to R13,000 for a 100 m hole on current driller price lists. Getting the water into the house usually adds a pressure pump (R2,950). The right pump is set by how deep it hangs and how much water the borehole can give, not by the biggest motor you can buy.

Deeper holes need a pump that can push water higher, so the price climbs with depth. Past 100 m the pump is chosen on site.
How do you choose the right pump size?
- How deep it hangs. The pump sits below the lowest water level, so it must lift water from there to the top of the hole and on to the tank.
- What the borehole can give. A yield test after drilling measures the safe flow. A pump that pulls more than that runs the hole dry and burns out.
- What you need. A house needs far less than an irrigated orchard. Size for the job, then store water in a tank.
Borehole flow in government records is usually given in litres a second. As a guide, 0.5 to 2 litres a second is 1,800 to 7,200 litres an hour, which is a good household borehole. The median tested safe flow in the government’s Limpopo drilling records is 0.4 litres a second.
Solar or electric borehole pump?
A solar pump runs off its own panels and pumps during the day into a tank, so it keeps working through load-shedding and costs nothing to run. It costs more up front and pumps less on cloudy days, so it needs a bigger tank. An electric pump is cheaper to buy and pumps at any hour, but stops when the power does. We size and price solar pumps on the site visit, from the depth, the yield and how much water you need a day.
Replacing a borehole pump
When a pump fails, it is pulled out on its pipe, checked, and repaired or replaced. The same depth prices above apply to a new pump. While it is out, it is worth measuring the water level and checking the cable and the pipe joints, because a pump that keeps failing is often a sign of a falling water level or a borehole that needs cleaning. Questions people ask
How much is a borehole pump in South Africa?
R8,000 to R13,000 for a submersible pump on current driller price lists, depending on the depth it hangs at. A pressure pump for the house adds R2,950.
What size pump do I need for a 60 m borehole?
One rated to lift water from below the lowest water level to your tank, and no stronger than the borehole’s tested yield. On current price lists that pump costs about R9,800.
Can I run a borehole pump on solar?
Yes. A solar pump fills a tank during the day and keeps working through load-shedding. It needs panels sized to the pump and a bigger tank for cloudy days. We price it on the site visit.
